IUSD uses both weighted and unweighted GPA. Unweighted GPA uses a 4.0 scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1). Weighted GPA adds 1.0 bonus point for AP/IB courses and 0.5 for Honors courses. UC GPA (used for UC/CSU applications) has its own calculation and only includes 10th and 11th grade courses, with extra weight for approved honors/AP courses. We recommend asking your counselor for your official UC GPA or reaching out to us for a detailed walkthrough.

There's no magic number — it depends on your goals, bandwidth, and the specific APs you choose. Taking 8 APs and getting Bs is generally worse than taking 5 and getting As. Top Irvine students heading to UCs often take 7–10 total over 4 years. We can help you build a plan based on your specific situation and target schools. Don't take APs just to look impressive — take ones you'll actually do well in and care about.

IUSD does not require community service for graduation. Many IUSD high schools offer transcript recognition when a student completes 25 approved hours in a school year and submits the required form. School-specific rules, deadlines, and eligible activities can change, so check the community service guide and confirm details with your counselor.

Earlier than you think. Freshman year is when you establish your academic foundation — grades and course selection here matter. Sophomore year: start exploring clubs, activities, and possible research/internship opportunities. Junior year: take the SAT/ACT, start thinking about college lists, prepare for AP exams. Senior year: applications (most due November–January), essays, interviews. The earlier you're aware of this timeline, the less stressful it'll be.
